Credit hire over a long weekend in Sydney

You were not at fault, but the crash happened on a long weekend. Repairers are shut, insurers are on skeleton staff and you still need a car that matches what you drive. The good news: you can usually get a replacement vehicle moving the same day, even when everything else is closed.

This is the practical version for Sydney drivers. What actually closes, what does not, how to report the crash, where your car goes if it is towed, and what to have ready so Tuesday morning is not a write-off of its own.

Key takeaways

  • Credit hire can start on a public holiday even when repairers and assessors are closed.
  • Police reporting is available 24 hours via the Police Assistance Line on 131 444 or online.
  • Tow yards charge storage by the day, so get the car to a repairer as soon as one opens.
  • Photograph the scene before the cars move, and back the photos up the same day.
  • On Tuesday, call your repairer, the credit hire company and the at-fault insurer, in that order.

What actually closes over a long weekend

The long weekends that catch Sydney drivers are the obvious ones: Australia Day, Easter, Anzac Day, the King's Birthday in June, the October Labour Day weekend and the Christmas to New Year stretch. Double demerit periods run across most of them, which changes driver behaviour on the road but not the paperwork after a crash.

What closes:

  • Most smash repairers, including the big prestige specialists in Alexandria, Artarmon, Smithfield and Botany. A few run a Saturday morning, almost none open Sunday or the public holiday.
  • Insurer call centres. Claims lines stay open, but the assessor who has to authorise your repair or hire is not at their desk.
  • Assessment centres and tow-away yards' office staff. The yard itself does not close.
  • Your own insurer's claims team, if you were planning to claim on your own policy instead.

What does not close:

  • Police. The Police Assistance Line runs 24 hours, and officers attend injury crashes and major blockages any day of the year.
  • Towing. Tow trucks work long weekends because that is when they are busiest.
  • Credit hire. A not-at-fault replacement car can be arranged while the at-fault insurer is closed, because the claim sits with the credit hire company until settlement.

If you are reading this on the Saturday of a long weekend, the practical position is: report, photograph, secure the car, and get moving on a replacement. The rest can wait until Tuesday. Our guide to the first 24 hours walks through the order of operations.

Getting a replacement car when repairers are shut

You do not need a repairer to be open to get a replacement car. You need to establish that the other driver was at fault and that your car is off the road. That can be done from the roadside with photos, the other driver's details and a police report number.

Credit hire is the mechanism. The replacement vehicle is provided to you on credit, and the at-fault insurer pays the hire cost as part of the claim. You are not out of pocket for the hire itself. Rates, bond and any fees are shown on the car's page before payment, and the bond equals the excess you choose.

What you can realistically get on a long weekend:

  • Same-day or next-day delivery of a like-for-like car, including to a home in Mosman, a hotel in the CBD or a repairer's yard in Alexandria.
  • A car that matches your own in tier, not a small hatchback standing in for a performance SUV.
  • Delivery across most of metropolitan Sydney, with collection from a base if you prefer.

Like-for-like is the standard the law expects. If your car is a performance SUV, the replacement should be in that territory. See what like-for-like means in NSW for the detail.

Police reporting and crash report numbers on a holiday

NSW Police attend crashes that involve injury, a fatality, a driver who fails to stop, a driver affected by alcohol or drugs, or a major blockage. If none of those apply, you report it yourself through the Police Assistance Line on 131 444, or online.

On a long weekend, expect the line to be busy and the online form to be the faster path. You will need:

  1. The date, time and location of the crash, as precisely as you can describe it.
  2. Registration numbers and driver details for every vehicle involved.
  3. Names and contact details of any witnesses.
  4. Photos of the damage, the position of the cars and the road.
  5. Your own licence number and contact details.

You get a crash report number, often called an event number. Write it down and keep it with your photos. Insurers and credit hire companies ask for it, and it is the single most useful piece of paper in the whole process.

If the other driver left the scene, report it as a fail-to-stop. That changes the police response and it changes how the claim is handled. Do not wait until Tuesday to report a fail-to-stop.

One Sydney-specific trap: crashes on the M4, M5, M1 or the Harbour Tunnel often involve a traffic response crew who clear the scene quickly. Get your photos before the cars are moved if it is safe to do so. Our step-by-step after a not-at-fault crash covers the sequence.

Towing and storage over a long weekend

Towing is the part people get wrong, and it is the part that costs money if you do. A tow truck will come on a public holiday. What matters is where the car goes and who is paying for it to sit there.

Two options:

  • Tow to a repairer you trust. On a long weekend the yard will be locked and the car sits outside until Tuesday. That is usually fine, and it keeps the car under your chosen repairer's control.
  • Tow to a holding yard. This happens when the car is undriveable, when police direct the tow, or when you do not have a repairer in mind. Holding yards charge storage by the day, and long weekends are three or four days of storage before anyone looks at the car.

Storage is a recoverable cost in a not-at-fault claim, but it has to be reasonable. If the car sits in a holding yard for a week because nobody authorised the move, the at-fault insurer will push back. Get the car to a repairer as soon as one opens.

Practical rules for a long weekend:

  1. Ask the tow operator where the car is going and get the address in writing, by text if possible.
  2. Photograph the car before it is loaded, including the odometer and the damage from several angles.
  3. Take your personal belongings out at the roadside. Getting them back from a locked yard on a public holiday is painful.
  4. Tell your insurer and, if you are using credit hire, tell them where the car is.

If the car is a write-off risk, read repairs and write-offs before you agree to anything.

When the insurer will not answer until Tuesday

This is the normal long weekend experience. You call the at-fault insurer's claims line, you get a reference number, and you are told an assessor will be in touch. That call may not come until Tuesday or Wednesday.

What that does not stop:

  • You getting a replacement car through credit hire. The credit hire company carries the cost and recovers it from the at-fault insurer later. You do not need the insurer's permission to start.
  • You getting your car assessed privately, if you want a second opinion on the damage.
  • You reporting the crash to police and to your own insurer, if your policy requires notification.

What it does stop:

  • Authorisation of repairs. Nothing gets fixed until the at-fault insurer accepts liability or your own insurer agrees to act.
  • Any decision on write-off versus repair.

If the at-fault insurer later disputes the hire, that is a conversation between them and the credit hire company, not a bill that lands on you. The dispute process is well trodden.

Keep a simple log: date, time, who you spoke to, reference number, what was promised. On Tuesday morning that log is worth more than a long memory.

Photographing everything before it moves

If there is one thing to do on a long weekend, it is this. Photos taken in the first ten minutes are the evidence that decides liability, and liability decides who pays for your hire car.

What to capture:

  • Wide shots of both cars in the road, showing lane position, signage and traffic signals.
  • Close shots of every damaged panel on both cars.
  • Registration plates on all vehicles.
  • The other driver's licence, if they will show you. If not, photograph their rego and let police sort it.
  • Skid marks, debris, broken glass and any fluid on the road.
  • The road name and any nearby landmark, so the location is unambiguous.
  • Your own odometer, for the record.

Do not move the cars until police say you can, unless they are blocking traffic and it is safe to clear them. On the M4 at Prospect or the M1 at Wahroonga on a long weekend, traffic management will want the road cleared quickly. Take the photos first.

Back the photos up to the cloud before you go to bed. Phones get lost, and a long weekend is a long time to be carrying the only copy.

If the other driver admits fault at the scene, get it on video if you can, or note it down with the time. Admissions are useful, but they are not the whole case. The photos are.

If you were heading away and now cannot

Long weekends are when Sydney empties out. The Hume toward the Southern Highlands, the M1 toward the Central Coast and Newcastle, the Great Western Highway toward the Blue Mountains, and the Princes Highway south toward the Illawarra all fill up from Thursday night.

A crash on the way out changes the trip. Three things to sort:

  • Your car. If it is drivable and safe, you may still be able to continue, but get it assessed before you put more kilometres on it. A wheel alignment issue or a cracked radiator does not improve with distance.
  • Your accommodation. Most places will not refund a long weekend booking at short notice. Some will move the dates if you call the same day.
  • Your replacement car. If you are continuing the trip, the replacement needs to be suitable for it. A performance SUV is fine for the Hume. If you were towing a boat or a trailer to Jervis Bay, you need a vehicle rated for it.

For towing and load-carrying trips, the right replacement is a ute or a large SUV, not a sedan. The replacement by car type page maps this out.

Tell the credit hire company what the car needs to do, not just what you drove. Towing capacity, seating and luggage space all matter when the trip is still on.

If the original car was a tow vehicle or a family hauler, a Silverado or similar is the honest like-for-like.

What to have ready for Tuesday morning

Tuesday is when the claim actually starts moving. Have this ready and you will be ahead of most people who crashed on the same weekend.

ItemWhy it matters
Crash report numberInsurers and credit hire companies ask for it first
Other driver's name, rego, insurer and policy numberEstablishes the at-fault party
Photos, backed upLiability and damage evidence
Tow company name and where the car isStops storage costs running up
Your log of calls and reference numbersShows you did the right thing promptly
Your licence and the car's registrationNeeded for the hire agreement

Then make three calls in this order: your repairer, the credit hire company, and the at-fault insurer. The repairer books the assessment. The credit hire company confirms the replacement. The insurer gets the claim number moving.

If you are a fleet manager, the same list applies but multiplied. One crash on a long weekend can take three vehicles off the road if the team was travelling together. See business and fleet for how that is handled.

For the full picture of how the at-fault insurer ends up paying, read how the at-fault insurer pays for hire. And when you are ready to book, the national booking page is accident replacement vehicles.

The long weekend checklist

Print this or screenshot it. It is the short version of everything above.

  1. Make the scene safe. Hazards on, get out of traffic, call 000 if anyone is hurt.
  2. Photograph everything before the cars move.
  3. Exchange details with the other driver. Get their insurer if they have it.
  4. Report to police if required, or via the Police Assistance Line on 131 444.
  5. Arrange the tow. Know where the car is going and get the address.
  6. Clear your belongings out of the car at the roadside.
  7. Call the credit hire company and arrange a like-for-like replacement.
  8. Log every call with time, name and reference number.
  9. Back up your photos.
  10. On Tuesday, call the repairer, the credit hire company and the at-fault insurer, in that order.

If you are not sure whether credit hire is the right route for you, the comparison against claiming on your own policy is set out in credit hire versus claiming your own insurance. For the paperwork you will be asked to sign, see what you sign.

One last thing. Double demerit weekends mean more police on the road, which means more crashes are reported and more claims are lodged at once. The earlier you call, the earlier you get a car. Do not wait for Tuesday to start.

Questions people ask

Can I get a replacement car on a public holiday?
Yes. Credit hire companies arrange replacement vehicles on public holidays because that is when crashes cluster. You do not need the at-fault insurer to be open, and you do not need a repairer to have assessed your car. What you do need is the other driver's details, a police report number if one was issued, and photos of the damage. Delivery across metropolitan Sydney is usually available the same day or the next day, and the rate, bond and any fees are shown on the car's page before payment.
Do tow yards charge storage over a long weekend?
Holding yards charge storage by the day, and a long weekend is three or four days before anyone inspects the car. Storage is generally recoverable in a not-at-fault claim, but it has to be reasonable. The cheapest path is to have the car towed directly to your chosen repairer, even if their yard is locked until Tuesday. If the car must go to a holding yard, get the address, tell your insurer, and arrange the move as soon as a repairer opens.
What if the insurer is closed for three days?
You can still get a replacement car. Credit hire works on the basis that the credit hire company carries the cost and recovers it from the at-fault insurer later. The insurer being closed delays authorisation of repairs, not your access to a hire car. Keep a log of every call, reference number and promise, and call the at-fault insurer first thing Tuesday. If liability is later disputed, that is a matter between the insurer and the credit hire company, not a bill for you.
Does double demerits affect my not-at-fault claim?
No. Double demerit periods apply to traffic offences, not to who caused a crash. If the other driver was at fault, their demerit points and any fines are their problem. Your claim for repairs and a replacement car stands on the facts of the crash, not on the penalty regime that was running that weekend. Report the crash the same way you would on any other day, and keep the crash report number with your other paperwork.
Can I keep driving my car if the damage is minor?
Only if it is safe and legal. Check lights, indicators, mirrors, tyres and that nothing is rubbing or leaking. If a wheel is misaligned or a radiator is cracked, a long drive makes it worse and can turn a repairable car into a write-off. Get it looked at before you commit to a long trip. If you are unsure, arrange a replacement car and leave yours with the repairer. Our guide to repairs and write-offs explains how the assessment decision is made.
What if the other driver will not give their details?
Report it to police as a fail-to-stop, and do it the same day, not on Tuesday. Get their registration number if you can, plus photos of the car and the scene. Fail-to-stop changes the police response and the claim pathway. Your credit hire company can often still arrange a replacement car, and the claim may move to the Nominal Defendant if the other vehicle cannot be identified. Do not delay reporting, because time limits apply.
