A crash on the M1 or the old F3 near Berowra or Mount White is not like a suburban bingle. Speeds are higher, police attend, and your car is often towed to a holding yard before you have worked out how you are getting home. If the crash was not your fault, you can usually arrange a replacement car through credit hire, with the at-fault insurer paying the reasonable hire cost.

This page explains what happens after a freeway crash in Sydney and on the Central Coast, from the crash report number to the tow, the holding yard, and getting a like-for-like car back in your driveway while your own car is repaired.

Key takeaways

  • On the M1 and old F3, police usually attend and give you a crash report number, which insurers ask for.
  • Your car may be towed to a holding yard at Berowra or Mount White, and you may need to arrange your own way home.
  • If the crash was not your fault, credit hire can provide a like-for-like replacement car without you paying upfront.
  • Multi-vehicle freeway crashes can complicate fault, but credit hire can still proceed with the right evidence.
  • Keep the replacement car only while your own car is being repaired or the claim is being settled, and keep records of every extension.

What is different about a freeway crash

The M1 Pacific Motorway, and the old F3 it replaced, carry traffic at 100 to 110 km/h for long stretches. A collision at that speed produces more energy, more damage, and more disruption than a crash on Pennant Hills Road or the Pacific Highway through Hornsby. That changes almost everything about the aftermath.

First, the road itself. Police and Transport for NSW will often close lanes or roll out a reduced speed limit to protect the scene. If you are southbound near Berowra at 7am on a weekday, expect a queue back past the Hawkesbury River within minutes. If you are northbound near Mount White at 5pm on a Friday, expect the same in the opposite direction.

Second, the tow. Freeway towing is not a matter of calling the bloke you know in Chatswood. Heavy recovery equipment may be needed, and the attending police or Transport for NSW traffic commanders will direct which tow operator attends. Your car may be taken to a holding yard rather than a repairer you choose.

Third, injuries. High-speed crashes are more likely to involve ambulance attendance and hospital transport. That affects how quickly you can deal with insurers and paperwork.

Fourth, fault. Multi-vehicle freeway crashes are common, and fault is not always obvious. Dashcam footage, police observations and the position of damage all matter. If you were not at fault, credit hire is usually available. If fault is disputed, it can still proceed, but expect the at-fault insurer to ask more questions. Our not-at-fault explained page covers how fault is assessed in NSW.

Police attendance and the crash report number

On a motorway, police almost always attend. Even a minor collision on the M1 can trigger a call because of the risk to other traffic. When they do, you will be given a crash report number, sometimes called a COPS event number or a police reference. Write it down. Photograph the card if they give you one.

If police do not attend, you can still report the crash. In NSW, you must report a crash to police if anyone was injured, if the other driver failed to stop, or if you are told to. You can do this at a police station or through the Police Reporting Portal. Keep the reference number.

What the crash report number is for:

  • It links your version of events to an official record.
  • Insurers ask for it when a freeway crash is involved.
  • It helps if the at-fault driver later disputes what happened.
  • It supports a credit hire application when fault is not admitted.

Get the other driver's details too: name, address, licence number, registration, insurer if they know it, and a photo of their car and yours. On a freeway shoulder this is awkward, but do it if it is safe. If it is not safe, stay in your car with your hazard lights on and wait for police.

Do not discuss fault at the scene. Exchange details, be polite, and let the evidence do the talking. Our first 24 hours guide sets out the order of operations.

Where your car gets towed and what it costs

On the M1 and old F3, the likely holding yards are around Berowra, Mount White, and sometimes further afield depending on which operator is on rotation. Your car may sit there until an assessor inspects it or until you nominate a repairer. That can take days.

Tow costs vary with distance, time of day, and whether heavy recovery is needed. If you are not at fault, the tow is generally recoverable from the at-fault insurer as part of your claim, but you may be asked to pay upfront and seek reimbursement, or the tow operator may invoice the insurer directly. Keep every receipt and every text message from the tow company.

What to do at the yard:

  1. Get the yard's name, address and phone number from the tow driver or police.
  2. Ask for a photo of your car at the yard before it is moved again.
  3. Remove valuables, toll tags and garage remotes if you can access the car.
  4. Tell your insurer where the car is, and tell the credit hire company too.
  5. Do not authorise repairs or sign anything at the yard without advice.

If your car is driveable, you may be allowed to drive it to a repairer of your choice. If it is not, the yard holds it until it is released. Release usually requires the insurer's authority or your written instruction. Our repairs and write-offs page explains what happens if the damage is severe.

Getting home from Berowra, Hornsby or Mount White

This is the part people underestimate. A crash at Berowra at 6pm can leave you on the shoulder with no way home to the Northern Beaches, the Hills, or the Central Coast. Rideshare may not come to a motorway shoulder, and taxis rarely do.

Your options, roughly in order:

  • Police or Transport for NSW may arrange a courtesy tow to a safe location off the motorway.
  • A friend or family member can collect you from a nearby service centre, such as the Berowra or Mount White service centres if you can get there safely.
  • If you are injured, ambulance will take you to hospital, often Hornsby or Gosford.
  • If you have roadside assistance, call them, but note that most policies do not cover the tow after a crash.

Once you are home, the practical problem becomes transport. If your car is in a holding yard and repairs will take weeks, you need a replacement car. That is where credit hire comes in. If the crash was not your fault, you can usually hire a like-for-like car and the at-fault insurer pays the reasonable cost. You can see the kind of cars available through accident replacement vehicles and start a booking when you are ready.

Do not wait until the insurer has admitted fault. In NSW, credit hire can start before admission, subject to the paperwork.

Arranging a replacement car the same day

Same-day replacement is realistic if you have the basics: the other driver's details, a crash report number, photos, and your own licence. The process is called credit hire. You sign an agreement, the hire company provides the car, and the at-fault insurer is billed later. You do not pay upfront.

What you will be asked for:

  • Your driver licence and a second form of ID.
  • The other driver's name, registration and insurer if known.
  • The crash report number.
  • Photos of the damage to both cars.
  • A short statement of what happened.
  • Your insurer's details, even though you are not claiming on your own policy.

Like-for-like matters. If you were driving a prestige or performance car, you are entitled to a comparable replacement, not a small hatchback. Our like-for-like page explains the principle, and credit hire for prestige and performance cars goes into more detail.

If you need a large SUV for family or work, a seven-seat option like the Audi Q7 Quattro is a common replacement. If your own car is a performance SUV, the Range Rover Sport is a closer match.

If the crash involved multiple vehicles

Multi-vehicle crashes on the M1 are common, especially in rain or when traffic stops suddenly near the Hawkesbury River bridge or the Mount White climb. Fault can be split, disputed, or unclear. That does not automatically rule out credit hire, but it changes how it is managed.

What to do:

  • Get details from every driver you can, not just the one behind you.
  • Note the order of the vehicles and where each impact occurred.
  • Ask police for the crash report number and the names of other drivers if they will share them.
  • Keep your dashcam footage. Download it before it overwrites.
  • Tell the credit hire company that multiple vehicles were involved.

In a chain collision, the insurer for the driver who caused the initial impact may accept liability for all the damage, or each insurer may argue about proportions. Credit hire can still proceed, but the hire company will assess the risk. If fault is disputed, the at-fault insurer may challenge the hire later. Our when an insurer disputes a credit hire claim page covers what happens then.

If you were the middle car, you may be both not at fault for the car behind and partly at fault for the car in front. Get advice before you sign anything. A solicitor who handles motor accident claims can review your position. This is general information, not legal advice.

How long repairs take for freeway damage

Freeway damage is usually structural. A 100 km/h impact can bend rails, twist the floor pan, and damage suspension mounts. Repairs take longer than a car park scrape, and parts for prestige and performance cars can take weeks to arrive from overseas.

Typical timelines in Sydney:

DamageTypical repair time
Bumper, lights, minor panel1 to 2 weeks
Structural rail or floor damage4 to 8 weeks
Prestige or performance, parts from overseas6 to 12 weeks or more
Write-offClaim settlement, then replacement car

These are general estimates, not promises. Your repairer will give you a better idea after the car is stripped and assessed. Our how long prestige car repairs take in Sydney page goes into more detail.

While the car is being repaired, you keep the replacement. The at-fault insurer pays for a reasonable period, which generally matches the repair time. If repairs drag on because parts are delayed, the hire can usually be extended, but keep the hire company informed and keep records of every delay.

Keeping the replacement while the claim runs

Credit hire is not a free car forever. The at-fault insurer will pay for a reasonable period, and what is reasonable depends on the repair time and your circumstances. If you keep the car after yours is repaired, or after the claim settles, you may become responsible for the cost.

How to keep things clean:

  • Return the car promptly when your own car is back on the road.
  • Tell the hire company immediately if repairs are delayed or the car is written off.
  • Keep a copy of the repairer's updates and the insurer's letters.
  • Do not sign a settlement with the at-fault insurer without checking how it affects the hire.
  • Ask for the hire period to be confirmed in writing if it is extended.

If your car is written off, the hire period usually ends when the insurer pays you the agreed value, not when you buy a new car. Our credit hire and write-offs page explains the difference.

For business and fleet vehicles, the calculation is different because the car may be earning. Our credit hire for business and fleet cars page covers that, and accident replacement car Sydney shows the vehicles available for delivery.

What it costs and who pays

In a not-at-fault claim, the at-fault insurer generally pays the reasonable cost of a like-for-like replacement car. You do not pay upfront. The rate, the bond and every fee are shown on the car's page before payment. The bond equals the excess you choose. Paying by card carries a small surcharge, while bank transfer and cash on the rental do not. Cars can be booked from a single day.

If fault is disputed and the at-fault insurer refuses to pay, the hire company may pursue the cost through the insurer or, in some cases, through you under the agreement you signed. That is why the paperwork matters. Our what you sign in credit hire paperwork page explains the key clauses, and credit hire costs and who pays what sets out the money flow.

Your own insurer may also offer a hire car under your policy, but using it can affect your no-claim bonus and your excess. Our credit hire vs claiming your own insurance page compares the two.

For freeway crashes, the main risk is a dispute about fault. If you have a crash report number, photos and a clear account, the risk drops. If you do not, the hire company may still proceed, but expect more questions.

Talk to your accountant or solicitor if the hire interacts with your business or a personal injury claim. This page is general information, not personal advice.

Next steps after a freeway crash

If you are reading this on the shoulder of the M1, get safe first. If you are reading it at home in Hornsby or Erina with a damaged car in a Berowra holding yard, the next steps are straightforward.

  1. Get the crash report number and the other driver's details.
  2. Find out where your car was towed and whether it is driveable.
  3. Tell your insurer, but do not accept a settlement yet.
  4. Arrange a like-for-like replacement through credit hire.
  5. Keep every document, photo and message.

You can start the replacement process online and have a car delivered to your home or workplace. If you are not sure whether credit hire applies to your crash, read what is credit hire explained and how credit hire works.

Questions people ask

Who pays for the tow after a freeway crash?
If you were not at fault, the tow is generally recoverable from the at-fault insurer as part of your claim. In practice, you may be asked to pay the tow operator upfront and seek reimbursement, or the operator may invoice the insurer directly. Keep the receipt and any text messages. If police directed the tow, the cost is still part of your claim. If you were at fault, your own insurer may cover the tow depending on your policy.
Can I get a replacement car if my car is towed to a holding yard?
Yes. A holding yard does not prevent credit hire. You will need the other driver's details, the crash report number, photos and your licence. The replacement car can be delivered to your home or workplace while your car sits in the yard. Tell the hire company where your car is, because the at-fault insurer may want to inspect it there. Do not authorise repairs or sign anything at the yard without advice.
Do I need a police report for a motorway crash?
Police usually attend motorway crashes, and you should get the crash report number. If they do not attend, you can still report the crash at a police station or through the Police Reporting Portal. Insurers ask for the report number when a freeway crash is involved, and it helps if fault is disputed. It is not the same as a full police report, which you may need to request separately for court or insurer purposes.
How long can I keep the replacement car?
You can keep it while your own car is being repaired or while the claim is being settled, as long as the hire is reasonable. If repairs take longer because parts are delayed, the hire can usually be extended, but tell the hire company immediately. If your car is written off, the hire usually ends when the insurer pays the agreed value. Keeping the car longer than reasonable may make you responsible for the cost.
What if the at-fault driver does not admit fault?
Credit hire can still proceed. The hire company will assess the evidence, including the crash report number, photos and dashcam footage. The at-fault insurer may dispute the claim later, and the hire company may pursue it. If fault is genuinely unclear, get advice from a solicitor who handles motor accident claims. This is general information, not legal advice.
Can I choose my own repairer after a freeway crash?
In NSW, you can generally choose your own repairer, but if the car is in a holding yard, it may need to be released to that repairer. The at-fault insurer may want to inspect the car first. Tell the hire company and your insurer which repairer you have chosen, and keep a copy of the repairer's assessment. If the car is a write-off, the repairer will not proceed and the claim moves to settlement.
