If you have just been shunted on Driver Avenue or Anzac Parade on an event night, you can get a replacement car even if the crash happened hours ago. The other driver's insurer may not answer until Monday, but that does not mean you wait.

This page explains what to do at the scene, how to get a like-for-like car to Paddington, Surry Hills or Woollahra, and how to deal with insurers the next day. It is written for people who drive something worth replacing properly, not a shopping trolley.

Key takeaways

  • Event nights around Moore Park turn Driver Avenue and Anzac Parade into a stop-start crawl, which is where most low-speed shunts happen.
  • Collect photos, witness details and the other driver's information before you leave the scene, even if they admit fault.
  • A bumper scrape on a prestige car can disable radar, cameras and parking sensors, so the car may not be safe to drive.
  • If you are not at fault, you are entitled to a like-for-like replacement, not a base model.
  • Book the replacement before the repairer opens so the car is ready when you need it.

Why event nights produce so many minor crashes

When the Swans or the Roosters play at the SCG, or a concert fills Allianz Stadium, the streets around Moore Park turn into a slow-moving queue. Driver Avenue becomes a one-way crawl. Anzac Parade backs up past the light rail. Lang Road and Moore Park Road are gridlocked from about 5pm.

In that stop-start traffic, the most common crash is a low-speed rear-ender. Someone looks down at their phone, or misjudges the gap when the car in front creeps forward, and taps the bumper. It happens at 10 km/h, but on a prestige car a 10 km/h tap can mean a radar sensor, a parking camera or a bumper with a parking sensor loom behind it.

The second common one is a car park scrape. The Entertainment Quarter car park, the Cook Road car park and the grass car parks fill up fast. People reverse out of tight spots in the dark, or clip a pillar on the way in. The damage is often cosmetic, but on a car with adaptive cruise control and blind-spot monitoring, a bumped bumper can throw a fault code that disables half the driver-assist systems.

Event nights also mean witnesses disappear quickly. By the time you have swapped details, the crowd has gone and the person who saw it all is halfway to Central. That is why what you do in the first ten minutes matters more than what you do the next day.

Driver Avenue, Anzac Parade and Lang Road pinch points

Not every part of Moore Park is equally bad. These are the spots where we see the most not-at-fault claims come from after event nights.

  • Driver Avenue, outside the SCG gates. Two lanes merge into one as you approach the car parks. Drivers jockey for position and clip each other's mirrors or rear bumpers.
  • Anzac Parade, northbound near Lang Road. The bus lane and the general lane confuse visitors. Someone changes lanes late and sideswipes the car in the next lane.
  • Lang Road, near the Robertson Road roundabout. Traffic backs up over the crest. You cannot see the queue until you are on top of it.
  • Moore Park Road, westbound at the Paddington gates. People turning right into Paddington misjudge the gap and clip a car going straight through.
  • The Entertainment Quarter car park, level 2 and 3. Tight ramps, blind corners and pillars. Reversing out of a 90-degree park is where most scrapes happen.
  • Cook Road, near the bus layover. Buses pull out and cars swerve. It is a classic sideswipe spot.

If you are in one of these spots on a Friday or Saturday night, expect to exchange details in the middle of a crowd. Keep your phone handy and take photos before anyone moves.

What to do before you leave the scene

At the scene, your job is to collect evidence, not to argue. The other driver may be apologetic, angry or on the phone to a friend. None of that matters as much as what you write down.

  1. Check no one is hurt. If anyone is injured, call 000. If the crash is minor and everyone is fine, you can move to the next step.
  2. Move to a safe spot if you can. On Driver Avenue or Anzac Parade, you are blocking event traffic. If the cars are drivable, pull into the nearest side street or car park. Do not leave the scene entirely.
  3. Photograph everything. Both cars from four angles, the damage close up, the number plates, the road layout, the street sign, the position of the cars before you move them. Take a photo of the other driver's licence and their rego sticker.
  4. Get the other driver's details. Full name, address, phone, email, insurer and policy number if they have it. If they refuse, note that down.
  5. Find a witness. Event nights are full of people. Ask someone to text you their name and number, or take a short video of them saying what they saw.
  6. Do not admit fault. Even if you think you might be partly to blame, leave that to the insurers. A casual sorry can be used against you later.

If the other driver leaves without giving details, that is a hit-and-run. Call the police assistance line on 131 444 as soon as you are safe.

Getting a replacement car to Paddington or Surry Hills

Once you are home and the adrenaline has worn off, the practical question is how you get to work on Monday. If the crash was not your fault, you are entitled to be put back in a similar car while yours is repaired. That is what like-for-like means.

We deliver to Paddington, Surry Hills, Woollahra, Bondi Junction, Randwick and the CBD. If your car is undrivable, we can arrange a tow and a replacement in the same call. If it is drivable but you would rather not risk it, we can meet you at your home or office.

Bookings are fulfilled by Drive Tribe (drivetribe.com.au), the trading name of Australian Business Holdings Pty Ltd, and this site is part of that group. You can see the actual cars available and book online at accident replacement car Sydney. The rate, the bond and any fees are shown on the car's page before you pay.

Most replacements are self-drive and can be delivered to a home or workplace. Minimum driver age is 20 on most cars, 25 or 30 on some. If you need a car that matches a prestige or performance vehicle, tell us what you drive and we will match it as closely as we can.

The difference between a bumper scrape and a sensor fault

A bumper scrape looks like a cosmetic problem. On a modern prestige car, it often is not. The bumper is where radar, ultrasonic sensors and cameras live. A low-speed tap can knock a sensor out of alignment, crack a mounting bracket or damage the wiring loom behind the cover.

Here is what to check before you assume the car is fine:

  • Dashboard warnings. Adaptive cruise control, forward collision alert, blind-spot monitoring, parking sensors, lane-keep assist. If any of these throw a warning, the car needs a scan.
  • Parking sensors. Put the car in reverse and listen. If the beeps are erratic or silent, a sensor is damaged.
  • Radar and camera. If the car has a forward-facing camera behind the rear-view mirror, a bump can knock it out of calibration. That is not a DIY fix.
  • Panel gaps. Run your hand along the gap between the bumper and the guard. If it is uneven, the bumper bar has moved.
  • Boot or tailgate. Check it opens and closes smoothly. A rear-ender can twist the latch.

If any of these are wrong, the car is not really drivable in the way you need it to be. A prestige car with a disabled driver-assist system is a different car. That is a strong argument for a like-for-like replacement while it is sorted.

Dealing with the other driver's insurer the next day

The other driver's insurer will usually call you within a day or two. Their job is to minimise their cost, not to look after you. You do not have to accept their first offer of a repairer or a hire car.

What to have ready when they call:

  • The other driver's name, rego, insurer and claim number.
  • Your photos and witness details.
  • A clear statement of what happened, in your own words.
  • Your repairer's details, if you have a preferred one.

They may tell you that you are only entitled to a small car, or that you have to use their repairer. In NSW, if you are not at fault, you are entitled to be put back in a similar position. That is the like-for-like principle. If your car is a prestige or performance model, a base hatchback is not like-for-like.

If they push back, you can ask them to put their position in writing. You can also use a credit hire arrangement, where the replacement car is provided now and the cost is recovered from the at-fault insurer later. This is common in not-at-fault claims and does not come out of your pocket if the claim is accepted.

For a deeper look at how this works, see dealing with insurers and how credit hire works.

If the car is drivable but not really

There is a gap between "the car starts" and "the car is safe and legal to drive". A car with a cracked bumper and a working headlight might pass a roadside check, but if the parking sensors are dead, the adaptive cruise control is offline and the boot does not latch properly, you are driving a compromised car.

Ask yourself these questions:

  • Do the lights all work, including brake lights and indicators?
  • Does the boot or tailgate close and stay closed?
  • Are there any dashboard warnings?
  • Does the car track straight, or does it pull to one side?
  • Is there any rubbing or scraping when you turn the wheel?

If you answer no to any of these, the car should not be on the road. Even if it is technically drivable, you are not getting the car you insured. That is the point of a like-for-like replacement.

If your car is in a prestige or performance tier, a replacement should be in the same tier. A Porsche Macan owner should not be put in a Corolla. A C63 owner should not be put in a Camry. The replacement should have the same practical capability: same number of seats, similar boot space, similar performance and similar safety systems.

Booking the replacement before the repairer opens

Smash repairers open at 7:30am or 8am. If you wait until then to start looking for a replacement car, you have already lost the morning. The better move is to book the night before, or first thing, so the car is waiting when you need it.

Here is a simple sequence:

  1. Report the claim to your insurer or the other driver's insurer. Get a claim number. You can do this online at any hour.
  2. Book the replacement. You can book online in a few minutes. Choose a car that matches yours, or as close as possible.
  3. Arrange delivery. If your car is at a repairer, have the replacement delivered there. If it is at home, have it delivered to your driveway.
  4. Tell your repairer. Let them know you have a replacement and give them the details so they can coordinate.

If you are not sure what to book, start with the first 24 hours guide. It walks through the whole sequence. For business owners and fleet managers, see business and fleet and fleet manager replacement car checklist.

You can also read more general guidance at what to do in the first 24 hours.

Choosing a replacement that actually matches your car

Not every not-at-fault crash needs a performance car. But if you drive one, a base model is not a fair swap. The replacement should match the tier, the body style and the practical use. A Macan owner with two kids and a dog needs an SUV, not a sedan. A C63 owner who commutes to the city needs something with similar seats and boot space.

We keep a mix of prestige and performance cars available for replacement bookings. Here are three that come up often for Moore Park and Paddington claims.

If your car is a different make or model, tell us what you drive and we will match it as closely as we can. The minimum driver age is 20 on most cars, 25 or 30 on some. Delivery is available to Paddington, Surry Hills, Woollahra and most of the eastern suburbs.

For a full explanation of how like-for-like is assessed, see like-for-like and like-for-like replacement car meaning NSW.

What to do if the other driver denies fault

At the scene, most people are reasonable. A week later, their insurer may tell a different story. That is why your evidence matters. Photos, witness details and a clear written statement are what win these arguments.

If the other driver denies fault, do not panic. The insurer will investigate. If liability is disputed, you may need to rely on your own insurer or a credit hire arrangement that includes a liability assessment. In many cases, the physical evidence (damage positions, road layout, dashcam footage) supports the not-at-fault driver.

If you have dashcam footage, download it immediately. Some systems overwrite after a few hours. If you do not have a dashcam, check whether the car has any built-in recording. Some prestige cars record around the time of a collision.

If the dispute drags on, you can ask for a copy of the other driver's statement and any photos they have. You are entitled to see the case against you. If it goes to a formal dispute, the insurer disputes hire car claim page explains the process.

Questions people ask

Can I get a replacement car the night of a crash near the SCG?
Yes, in many cases. If your car is undrivable and the crash was not your fault, you can book a replacement online at any hour. Delivery to Paddington, Surry Hills and nearby suburbs can often be arranged for the next morning, or sooner if a car is available. You do not need to wait for the other driver's insurer to approve it first. The rate, bond and fees are shown on the car's page before you pay.
What if the other driver admits fault at the scene?
Get it in writing if you can, or record a short video of them saying it. An admission at the scene is useful, but it is not the final word. Their insurer will still do its own assessment. Take photos, collect witness details and note the time and location. Do not rely on a verbal admission alone. If they later deny fault, your evidence will carry more weight.
Do I need a police report for a carpark crash?
For a minor carpark crash with no injuries, you do not usually need a police report. You should exchange details and report it to your insurer. If the other driver leaves without giving details, or if anyone is injured, call the police assistance line on 131 444. For a hit-and-run, a police report helps your claim. If police attend, get the event number.
How long does a like-for-like replacement car take to arrive?
In the eastern suburbs, delivery is often same-day or next-morning if you book before the repairer opens. If your car is being towed, tell us where it is going and we can meet it there. If you are booking after hours, the car can usually be delivered first thing. The exact timing depends on availability and your location.
Can I choose my own repairer after a not-at-fault crash?
Yes, in most cases you can choose your own repairer. The other driver's insurer may suggest one of their preferred shops, but you are not obliged to use it. If you have a repairer you trust, tell the insurer and get a quote. Keep in mind that some insurers may push back, but you are entitled to a quality repair. For more, see our guide on dealing with insurers.
What if my car is a write-off after a low-speed crash?
It is rare, but a low-speed crash can be a write-off if the damage is structural or the repair cost exceeds the car's value. If your car is written off, you may still be entitled to a replacement car while you negotiate a payout. The process is different from a repair, so read our repairs and write-offs guide. Talk to your insurer and, if needed, your solicitor.
