Replacement car referrals for South Coast repairers

South Coast repairers refer not at fault clients to us for a like-for-like replacement car, delivered to the shop or the customer's address between Nowra and Batemans Bay. The client pays nothing for the hire itself; the claim sits with the at fault insurer.
What makes the South Coast different is the traffic. Holiday crashes on the Princes Highway, a client base split between Sydney and the coast, and repair jobs that run past the week the owner planned to stay. This page sets out what a referral partner has to get right down here.
Key takeaways
- South Coast crash volume is seasonal and clustered on the Princes Highway, so a hire partner has to handle January spikes without dropping service.
- Delivery to Nowra, Ulladulla and Batemans Bay is realistic next day, and the client can return the car to Sydney instead of driving it back.
- Like-for-like matters most on the coast because the local prestige population is SUVs and high-spec utes, not sedans.
- The client pays nothing for the replacement car, the bond equals the excess they choose, and all rates and fees are shown on the car's page before payment.
- A referral should take one phone call, with the client's accommodation and length of stay as the key detail.

The South Coast repair market and the holiday crash pattern
Between Boxing Day and the end of January, the Princes Highway south of Nowra turns into a slow-moving car park. The crash pattern follows it. Rear-end shunts approaching the Jervis Bay Road turnoff, nose-to-tail through the roadworks near Milton, and a steady run of car park scrapes at Huskisson, Vincentia and Mollymook where the population triples and nobody knows the layout.
Easter and the October long weekend repeat it. So does every Friday afternoon in summer, when Sydney traffic hits the coast around 6pm and the last 40 kilometres take an hour.
Three things follow for a repairer.
- Volume is seasonal and lumpy. You might take six not at fault jobs in a fortnight in January and two in June.
- The at fault driver is often from interstate or from the other side of Sydney, which slows insurer contact.
- The client is frequently on holiday, so they have no second car, no local mechanic and no patience for a two week wait.
That last point is where a referral partner earns their place. A client whose car is drivable but unsafe, or off the road entirely, needs wheels the same day or the next. If they are staying at a holiday rental in Culburra with three kids and a boat trailer, a small hatchback solves nothing.
The South Coast also has a genuine prestige population. Weekenders from the eastern suburbs, retirees around Berry and Shoalhaven Heads with a European SUV in the garage, and tradies running high-spec utes. Those are the cars that make like-for-like matter.
What Nowra and Batemans Bay repairers need from a hire partner
Repairers down here have told us the same things repeatedly, and they are not complicated.
- Answer the phone. A client standing in your office at 4pm on a Friday needs an answer before they leave, not a callback on Monday.
- Take the intake off your hands. You should not be explaining credit hire, excess, or the difference between a hire car and a replacement car to someone who is already upset.
- Match the car. If the client drives a European SUV, send something comparable, not the cheapest thing on the lot.
- Deliver. Nowra, Bomaderry, North Nowra, South Nowra, Worrigee, Culburra, Sussex Inlet, Ulladulla, Batemans Bay, Moruya. A depot pickup in Sydney is useless to a client whose car is on your hoist.
- Keep you informed. You need to know when the car is collected so you can schedule the repair and release the vehicle.
The commercial side matters too. A referral arrangement should be transparent, in writing, and disclosed. If a partner is being paid for an introduction, the client should be able to see that. Anything else creates a problem for you later, particularly if the claim ends up in dispute.
Read our notes on what repairers need from a hire partner and on referral partner transparency if you are comparing arrangements. The short version: no lock-in, no pressure on the client, and a clear line between the repair and the hire.
We also do not ask you to change how you write your estimates. Your job is the repair. Ours is the car the client drives while you do it.

Age limits are set per car. Drivers under 25 can hire most cars with Young Driver Cover; the exact terms are shown before you pay.
Delivery down the Princes Highway: what is realistic
Delivery is available on the cars on our fleet, and the South Coast is a run we do properly rather than promise loosely.
From Sydney, a delivery to Nowra is roughly two and a half hours in clear traffic, and to Batemans Bay closer to four. That shapes the schedule.
| Destination | Typical delivery window |
|---|---|
| Nowra, Bomaderry, South Nowra | Same day or next morning |
| Jervis Bay, Culburra, Sussex Inlet | Next day |
| Ulladulla, Milton, Mollymook | Next day |
| Batemans Bay, Moruya, Broulee | Next day, booked before midday |
Two practical points. First, Friday afternoons in summer are the worst possible delivery window, because the highway is gridlocked from Waterfall south. We book coast deliveries for the morning where we can. Second, if the client is still in Sydney when the crash happens and the car is towed to a coast shop, we can often hand the replacement over in Sydney instead and let them drive it down. That is usually the better outcome.
Delivery is included in the arrangement rather than charged to the client as an extra, and the rate, the bond and any fees are shown on the car's page before payment. Paying by card carries a small surcharge; bank transfer and cash on the rental do not.

The coast fleet skews towards SUVs and utes, because that is what people actually drive down here. A few that come up repeatedly.
The Range Rover Vogue is the classic South Coast prestige car: a Sydney owner, a weekender at Berry or Shoalhaven Heads, and a boot full of gear. It is a diesel 4WD with 250 kW and 740 Nm, five seats, and a 0-100 of 6.9 seconds. When one is rear-ended at the roundabout at the bottom of Berry mountain on a Sunday afternoon, the client wants another one, not a sedan.

The Velar is the smaller sibling and turns up just as often with younger owners and smaller families. Diesel, all-wheel drive, 177 kW, five seats, 7.3 seconds to 100. It is an easy car to hand to someone who has never driven a large SUV.

Then there is the ute half of the coast. Tradies working out of Nowra and Ulladulla, and families towing boats to Batemans Bay. Two that suit that job.
The BYD Shark 6 Premium is a plug-in hybrid ute with 321 kW, 650 Nm, all-wheel drive and five seats, and it hits 100 in 5.7 seconds. It is a genuine like-for-like answer for someone whose dual-cab is in for repair.

If the client's car is a European sedan rather than an SUV, say so at referral and we will match it. Our general guidance on matching sits under like-for-like and replacement by car type.
The client who is only at the coast for a week
This is the South Coast problem in one sentence. A family from Lane Cove is staying at a holiday rental in Hyams Beach for seven days. On day two, someone runs into the back of their car at the Vincentia shops. The car is drivable but the tailgate will not close and the sensors are screaming.
What they need is not a repair. They need to finish their holiday and get home.
So the referral has two parts.
- The holiday week. Get them into a comparable car quickly, delivered to where they are staying, so the trip continues. Do not make them drive to Sydney to collect it.
- The return. The client can return the replacement car to Sydney rather than back to the coast. That is normal for us and it removes the worst part of the whole experience, which is a second four hour drive to drop off a hire car.
Practically, this means the repairer and the hire partner need to talk early. If the car will be assessed in Nowra but repaired in Sydney, or vice versa, the handover points change. Get it wrong and the client does three unnecessary trips.
The other thing that helps: tell us on day one whether the car is likely to be a total loss. If it is heading that way, the client's needs change completely, and the written-off path is different from the repair path. See written-off, not at fault.

When the repair will take longer than the holiday
It usually does. Parts for a European SUV can take a fortnight to land, and coastal shops are busy in January. A repair quoted at ten days in a quiet month can run to five weeks in the first week of the year.
Three scenarios, three answers.
| Scenario | What the client needs |
|---|---|
| Repair finishes before they go home | Replacement car returned to Sydney; original collected at the coast later |
| Repair runs past the holiday | Replacement car kept, driven home, returned in Sydney when the repair is done |
| Repair drags on for weeks | Ongoing hire, with the at fault insurer kept informed |
The middle row is the common one. The client drives home in the replacement car, the coast shop finishes the repair, and either the client comes back for it or it is transported. That last detail should be settled before they leave, not three weeks later.
On timing generally, our page on turnaround times for replacement cars covers how quickly a car can be in someone's hands, and how long prestige car repairs take deals with the repair side.
One warning worth passing to your clients. Insurers sometimes ring the client directly and suggest the hire should stop, or that a cheaper car would do. That conversation is best handled by us, not by someone on holiday. Point them to dealing with insurers and tell them to call us before agreeing to anything.
No cost to the client and what that means in practice
The client does not pay for the replacement car. That is the whole point of a not at fault claim, and it is the reason a referral is worth making rather than leaving someone to sort it out themselves.
What that actually involves:
- The claim sits with the at fault insurer, and the hire is recovered through the claim rather than charged to your customer.
- The client's own insurer is usually not involved at all, which is why they should not lodge with their own policy first.
- There is a bond, and it equals the excess the guest chooses. It is refundable and it is not a fee.
- Paying by card carries a small surcharge. Bank transfer and cash on the rental do not.
- The rate, the bond and every fee are shown on the car's page before payment. Nothing is added later.
The legal footing for this in New South Wales is the line of authority around Arsalan v Rixon, which is why like-for-like replacement is a reasonable expectation rather than a favour. We are not giving legal advice here; if a client's claim is contested or the amounts are significant, they should talk to a solicitor. Our own explanation of the background is at what credit hire is explained and how credit hire works.
For your practice, the practical benefit is that you are not the one fielding the calls about the hire car. You hand over a name and a number, the client is looked after, and you get on with the repair.
How to refer a client from the South Coast
The process is deliberately short.
- Call or send us the client's name, contact number, the vehicle, the accident location and date, and the at fault driver's details if you have them.
- Tell us where the client is staying and how long they are there. This is the single most useful piece of information for a coast job.
- Tell us whether the car is drivable, and whether you think it is heading for a total loss.
- We contact the client, handle the claim side, and arrange delivery or a Sydney handover.
- We keep you updated on collection so you can plan the repair.
If you are a broker or a solicitor rather than a repairer, the same intake works, and there are separate notes at referral partner for brokers and solicitor referral, not at fault. If you handle a lot of prestige work, referral partner for prestige repairers is the closer fit.
Two things we will not do. We will not pressure a client into a hire they do not want, and we will not ask you to withhold information from them. If a client would rather use their own insurer's hire arrangement, that is their call.
To set something up, see partners and referrals, or look at what we can put a client in today at accident replacement car Sydney. If you want the general background first, not at fault accident replacement covers the whole process from the client's side.
