North Shore Crash? Getting a Replacement Car

If you have been hit on the Pacific Highway, in the Lane Cove Tunnel or on Military Road, you can get a like-for-like replacement car delivered to your door on the North Shore while your own car is repaired. You do not have to accept a small hatchback when you drive a prestige SUV or performance car.

This page explains how not-at-fault replacement works in practice for Chatswood, Hornsby, Mosman, Lane Cove and the suburbs in between: what to do at the scene, where to tow, how delivery works, and what you never have to pay. It is written for drivers of cars worth replacing properly.

Key takeaways

  • If you are not at fault on the North Shore, you can get a like-for-like replacement car delivered to Chatswood, Hornsby, Mosman or Lane Cove, usually within hours.
  • You are not obliged to use an unsolicited tow truck or a repairer chosen by the other driver's insurer.
  • Like-for-like means a comparable prestige or performance car, not a compact hatchback, and the rate, bond and fees are shown before you pay.
  • Prestige repairs take longer because of parts, equipment and recalibration, so your replacement should cover the whole repair period.
  • If you are not at fault, you should not pay the daily rate or the bond, and card payments carry only a small surcharge.

North Shore crash hotspots

The North Shore is a crash corridor because so much traffic funnels onto a handful of roads. The Pacific Highway between St Leonards and Hornsby carries heavy commuter volume, with frequent rear-end collisions at the Artarmon and Chatswood intersections. The Lane Cove Tunnel and the Gore Hill Freeway see high-speed nose-to-tail shunts when traffic stops suddenly. Military Road through Neutral Bay, Cremorne and Mosman is narrow, busy and full of driveways, cyclists and buses, which produces a steady stream of side-swipes and low-speed impacts.

Other regular spots include the Roseville Bridge approaches, the Pacific Highway at Pymble and Turramurra, and the Pennant Hills Road junction at Wahroonga. On weekends, the Wakehurst Parkway and the roads around Manly Dam see more recreational traffic and more incidents.

If you drive a prestige or performance car, the other driver's insurer will often try to settle you into a compact replacement. That is not what the law requires. Under the principles in Arsalan v Rixon, a not-at-fault driver is entitled to be put back in the position they were in before the crash, which generally means a like-for-like vehicle. You can read more about that on our not-at-fault explained page.

The practical point: the North Shore is not a single market. A crash in Mosman is handled differently from one in Hornsby, because towing, repairer choice and delivery times all change. Knowing which suburb you are in helps you make faster decisions.

What to do at the scene on the Pacific Highway

On the Pacific Highway, the first priority is safety. If the cars are drivable, move them off the through lanes, ideally into a side street or a car park. If they are not, turn on hazard lights, put on a high-visibility vest if you have one, and stand behind the barrier or on the footpath, never between the cars.

Call 000 if anyone is injured. For a minor crash, call the Police Assistance Line on 131 444. You will need a police event number for your insurer and for any credit hire claim. Take photos before anything is moved: wide shots showing the position of both cars, close-ups of damage, number plates, and the other driver's licence and registration. Note the time, the weather and the road conditions.

Exchange details with the other driver, but do not admit fault, even casually. Statements like "sorry, I didn't see you" can be used against you later. If the other driver is aggressive or refuses to exchange details, stay in your car with the doors locked and call police.

If a tow truck arrives uninvited, you are not obliged to use it. Some operators work on commission and will take your car to a repairer you did not choose. You have the right to nominate your own tow and your own repairer. For a prestige car, that matters: not every tow operator has the right flatbed or the insurance to move an expensive vehicle safely.

Once you are safe, call your insurer and, if you are not at fault, call a replacement vehicle provider. The first 24 hours page sets out the full sequence.

Towing and repairer options in Chatswood and Hornsby

Chatswood and Hornsby are the two main repair hubs on the North Shore, and both have clusters of prestige-capable smash repairers. In Chatswood, the industrial streets off Victoria Avenue and the area around Chatswood West have several workshops that handle European marques. In Hornsby, the industrial estate near the Pacific Highway and the streets off Peats Ferry Road include repairers with aluminium and carbon-fibre capability.

If your car is towed, the tow operator will usually ask where to take it. You can nominate a repairer, but only if you know one. If you do not, the tow company may take it to a partner workshop. That is not necessarily bad, but for a prestige car you want a repairer who has the manufacturer's approval, the right diagnostic equipment and experience with your model.

Before you agree to a tow, ask three questions:

  • Is the operator insured for high-value vehicles?
  • Will the car be stored indoors or in a secure yard?
  • Can the car be moved later if I choose a different repairer?

If your car ends up in Chatswood and you live in Hornsby, or vice versa, that is not a problem for your replacement vehicle. Delivery is arranged to your home or workplace, not to the repairer. You can read more about repairer choice and timelines on our repairs and write-offs page.

One more thing: do not let a tow operator pressure you into signing a blank authority or an agreement to use a particular repairer. Read what you sign, and keep a copy.

Delivery to Chatswood, Hornsby, Mosman or Lane Cove

Replacement cars are delivered to your home, your workplace or wherever your car is being repaired. On the North Shore, that means Chatswood, Artarmon, Willoughby, Lane Cove, North Sydney, Mosman, Cremorne, Neutral Bay, Cammeray, Hornsby, Waitara, Turramurra, Pymble, Gordon, Killara, Lindfield, Roseville and the suburbs around them.

Delivery is usually within a few hours of approval during business hours. If you crash at 8am on the Pacific Highway at Pymble, you can often have a replacement by lunchtime. If you crash at 10pm on Military Road, delivery is typically the next morning. Weekend deliveries are possible but depend on the car and the location.

The car is brought to you by a staff member, not left in a random car park. You will do a walk-around inspection together, note any existing damage, and sign a condition report. The same process happens at collection. This protects you against disputes about damage you did not cause.

If you need the car delivered to a train station car park or a shopping centre, that can usually be arranged, but a home or work address is simpler. For business users, delivery to a site in Chatswood or Hornsby can be coordinated with your fleet manager.

To check availability for your suburb, use the accident replacement car Sydney page. Bookings are fulfilled by Drive Tribe (drivetribe.com.au), the trading name of Australian Business Holdings Pty Ltd, and this site is part of that group.

Like-for-like for a prestige SUV or performance car

Like-for-like does not mean identical. It means a car of similar size, type, prestige and performance, so you are not disadvantaged while yours is off the road. If you drive a Porsche Macan, you should be in a comparable luxury SUV, not a compact hatch. If you drive a performance SUV, you should be in something with similar power and presence.

The cars below are examples of what can be arranged for North Shore deliveries. Availability changes daily, and the minimum driver age is 20 on most cars and 25 or 30 on some.

For a luxury SUV replacement, the Porsche Macan is a natural fit: all-wheel drive, five seats, 185 kW, and a driving position that makes the Pacific Highway commute tolerable.

How a not-at-fault replacement runs
AccidentClaim lodgedCar deliveredYour car repairedHire recovered from the at-fault insurer

If the at-fault driver is from the city

Many crashes on the North Shore involve a driver who lives south of the harbour. That does not change your rights, but it can change how the claim is handled. The at-fault driver's insurer may be based interstate or use a claims team that does not know the North Shore. They may ask you to take your car to a repairer near their office, or to collect a replacement car from the city.

You are not required to do either. You are entitled to a replacement car delivered to you, and to have your car repaired at a repairer of your choice. If the insurer pushes back, refer them to the principle in Arsalan v Rixon and to your right to be put back in your pre-crash position.

In practice, the friction usually comes from the other insurer's hire car partner, which may only have small cars available. If you drive a prestige car, that is not like-for-like. Stand your ground, and let your replacement vehicle provider deal with the insurer directly.

If the at-fault driver is uninsured, or their insurer denies liability, credit hire can still proceed. The claim is against the at-fault driver, and their insurer usually steps in. For how that works, see how credit hire works and dealing with insurers.

Keep every message and email. If the claim ends up in dispute, a clear record helps. Our insurer disputes page covers the escalation path.

How long repairs take for prestige cars

Prestige repairs take longer than mainstream repairs for three reasons: parts come from overseas, the repairer may need manufacturer-specific equipment, and the car may need recalibration of driver-assistance systems after panel work.

Typical timelines in Sydney, assuming parts are available:

Damage typeTypical time off the road
Bumper scuff or minor panel3 to 7 days
Rear-end with boot and sensors1 to 3 weeks
Side impact with door and pillar2 to 5 weeks
Structural or airbag deployment4 to 10 weeks

Parts availability is the biggest variable. A European bumper or headlight can take a week or more to arrive, and some performance models have longer lead times. If your car is drivable but unsafe, the repairer may hold it until parts arrive.

Your replacement car should cover the whole period, not just the first week. If the insurer tries to cap the hire period, that is a common dispute. The test is reasonableness: how long a sensible person would take to repair the car. Our how long prestige car repairs take page goes deeper.

If the repair cost approaches the car's value, the insurer may write it off. That changes the claim from repair and hire to a payout negotiation. See repairs and write-offs for what to do next.

What you never have to pay

If you are not at fault, you should not be out of pocket for a like-for-like replacement car. You do not pay the daily rate, and you do not pay the bond, provided the claim is accepted and the car is returned in the condition it was hired. The bond equals the excess you choose, and it is refunded when the car comes back undamaged.

The only costs you might see are:

  • A small surcharge if you pay by card, while bank transfer and cash on the rental do not carry it.
  • Fuel, tolls and any traffic fines you incur during the hire.
  • Damage caused during your hire, which comes out of the bond.

Everything else, including delivery and collection on the North Shore, is part of the claim. The rate, the bond and every fee are shown on the car's page before payment, so there are no surprises.

If an insurer tells you that you must pay an upfront excess or a daily fee to get a replacement car, ask them to put that in writing. In most not-at-fault cases, that is not correct. For a full explanation, see what not-at-fault means in NSW and what is credit hire.

Businesses should also look at business and fleet and fleet loss of use claims, because downtime has a cost beyond the hire itself.

Getting started on the North Shore

The fastest path is to call while you are still at the scene, or as soon as you get home. Have your licence, the other driver's details, the police event number if you have one, and photos of the damage. If your car has been towed, have the tow company's name and the repairer's address.

From there, the process is:

  1. Confirm you were not at fault.
  2. Choose a like-for-like car and a delivery address.
  3. Arrange delivery, usually within hours.
  4. Let the provider handle the insurer and the credit hire agreement.
  5. Return the car when your own is repaired.

If you are a fleet manager, a smash repairer or a solicitor, we work with referral partners across the North Shore. See partners and referrals for how that works.

For a business vehicle, the business replacement vehicle page covers the additional steps, including loss of use. For a novated lease, see novated lease replacement.

Questions people ask

Do you deliver replacement cars to the North Shore?
Yes. We deliver to Chatswood, Hornsby, Mosman, Lane Cove, North Sydney, Willoughby, Artarmon, Cremorne, Neutral Bay, Cammeray, Turramurra, Pymble, Gordon, Killara, Lindfield, Roseville and surrounding suburbs. Delivery is usually within a few hours during business hours, or the next morning for late-night crashes. The car is brought to your home or workplace by a staff member, and you do a walk-around inspection together before signing a condition report. Delivery and collection are part of the claim when you are not at fault.
What if my car is towed to Chatswood?
If your car is towed to a Chatswood repairer, that does not affect your replacement vehicle. Delivery is arranged to your home or workplace, not to the repairer. If you did not choose the repairer, you can usually have the car moved to one you prefer, provided you cover any storage or transfer costs. Ask the tow operator for the repairer's name and address, and keep the paperwork. If you are unsure, call us and we can help you work through the options.
Can I get a replacement car the same day?
Often yes, if you call during business hours and the claim is straightforward. If you crash at 8am on the Pacific Highway, a replacement can usually be delivered by lunchtime. Crashes late at night or on weekends may mean delivery the next morning. Availability depends on the car you need and your suburb. The quickest way to find out is to call with your details and photos, and we will confirm what can be delivered and when.
Do I have to pay anything upfront?
If you are not at fault, you should not pay the daily rate or the bond. The bond equals the excess you choose and is refunded when the car is returned undamaged. The only costs you might see are a small surcharge for card payments, fuel, tolls and any fines you incur. Bank transfer and cash on the rental do not carry the surcharge. The rate, bond and every fee are shown on the car's page before payment.
What if the at-fault driver's insurer refuses to pay for a prestige replacement?
That is a common dispute. You are entitled to be put back in your pre-crash position, which generally means a like-for-like car. If the insurer refuses, your replacement vehicle provider can deal with them directly and, if needed, escalate the claim. Keep every message and email. If the dispute continues, you may need to seek legal advice. Our insurer disputes page explains the escalation path, and we can refer you to a solicitor if required.
How long can I keep the replacement car?
You can keep it for the reasonable repair period, which is how long a sensible person would take to repair your car. That includes waiting for parts. If the insurer tries to cap the hire period, ask them to justify it in writing. If your car is written off, the replacement usually ends when the payout is settled, though there may be a short period after that. Our repairs and write-offs page covers this in detail.
