BMW X7 vs Mercedes GLS as a replacement

If your own seven-seat SUV is in the shop after a not-at-fault crash, the BMW X7 and the Mercedes-Benz GLS are the two flagships you are most likely to be offered, and the honest answer is that either one is a fair like-for-like replacement for the other. The differences that matter over four to eight weeks are in the third row, the boot with all seats up, and how each one behaves on the M4 and the M5 at 5pm.

Both are diesel, both are all-wheel drive, both seat seven, and both can be delivered to a Sydney address. What follows is what a family or an executive actually notices once the novelty wears off and the school run, the airport and the Bunnings trip start to stack up.

Key takeaways

  • Either car is a fair like-for-like replacement for the other if your own car is a large seven-seat luxury SUV.
  • The GLS has the more usable third row for adults; the X7 is the sharper car around town.
  • Both are diesel and all-wheel drive, with the GLS quicker and the X7 more relaxed at a cruise.
  • Insurers question the tier and the duration of the hire, not the badge, so match your car and keep the paperwork tight.
  • Both cars are based at Mascot and can be delivered across Sydney, with the rate, bond and fees shown on the car's page before payment.

The flagship seven-seat question

You did not buy a seven-seat SUV to carry seven people every day. You bought it because twice a month it needs to, and the rest of the time it needs to swallow a pram, a dog crate, golf clubs or a set of samples without a fight. That is the real brief for a replacement, and it is why a Kluger or a Sorento is not a like-for-like answer when your own car is a GLS or an X7.

Under NSW law, a not-at-fault driver is entitled to be put back in the position they would have been in but for the crash. The leading case, Arsalan v Rixon, confirmed that this can include the reasonable cost of hiring a comparable vehicle while yours is repaired. It is not a windfall and it is not a rental car free-for-all, but it does mean the replacement should be broadly equivalent to what you were driving. You can read the plain-English version on our not-at-fault explained page.

Practically, that puts the X7 and the GLS in the same bracket. Both are large luxury SUVs with three rows, a diesel six, all-wheel drive and a footprint that makes the Rozelle Interchange feel tight. Neither is a sports car and neither pretends to be. The question is not which is better in the abstract, it is which one suits the eight weeks you are about to have.

One thing to settle early: the minimum driver age on most cars on the fleet is 20, but some cars are 25 or 30. If your partner, your nanny or a visiting parent is going to drive it, check that before the car is delivered, not after.

Third row: which one adults can actually use

This is where the two cars separate, and it is the first thing to test if you regularly carry six or seven people.

The GLS has the more usable third row for adults. The seat is higher, the cushion is longer, and there is enough knee room behind a normally positioned second row for a 175cm adult to sit there for the run from Mosman to the Central Coast without complaining. Access is helped by the way the second row folds and slides. It is still a third row, not a lounge, but it is the one you can put two adults in for an hour.

The X7 is close but not equal. Adults fit, and children fit easily, but taller passengers will notice the lower cushion and tighter footwell. For a school pickup at Cranbrook or a Saturday morning netball run at Ryde, it is fine. For a client transfer from the city to a Hunter Valley lunch, put the adults in the middle row and the teenagers in the back.

If your own car is a GLS and you are offered an X7, this is the one area where a fussy passenger might notice. If your own car is an X7 and you are offered a GLS, most people will consider it an upgrade in the back.

Both cars have the usual seven-seat compromises: with the third row in use, luggage space is limited, and the third row is not the place for anyone who gets car sick on the Galston Gorge.

Boot space with all seats up

With all seven seats in use, neither car is a load-lugger, and this is where a lot of replacement decisions go wrong.

The GLS gives you a deeper, more square well behind the third row. It will take a full weekly shop, a couple of soft overnight bags and a pram folded flat. The X7 is slightly shallower and the tailgate aperture is a little more tapered, so a large hard case has to go in on its side.

In practice, the difference is about one medium suitcase. If you are doing the airport run to Sydney Airport with five people and four bags, both cars work with the third row folded. If you are doing it with seven people and four bags, neither works, and you should be looking at a people mover instead. Our people mover replacement page covers that trade-off.

Where both cars earn their keep is with the third row down. The load area is long, flat and lined, and it will take a full set of golf clubs, a folded wheelchair, a dog crate or a stack of flat-pack boxes from IKEA Tempe without the seats being folded into a puzzle.

Two practical notes. First, the load cover in both cars is a nuisance if you are in and out all day; it usually ends up in the garage. Second, if you have a towbar-mounted bike rack, confirm the replacement has a towbar before delivery. Not all do, and a Saturday morning at Bobbin Head is a long way to go without one.

Diesel drivetrains and real-world Sydney fuel use

Both cars in this comparison are diesel, which is the right answer for a large seven-seat SUV in Sydney. You get torque for the hills and reasonable consumption on the motorway, and you are not hunting for a charger.

The X7 in the fleet produces 195 kW and 620 Nm and gets to 100 km/h in about 7.0 seconds. The GLS produces 243 kW and 700 Nm and does the same in about 6.3 seconds. The GLS is the quicker car and feels it, particularly on the on-ramp at Lane Cove or merging onto the M2 at Pennant Hills Road. The X7 is not slow, but it is tuned more for waft than for punch.

In real Sydney driving, expect both to sit in the low double digits per 100 km around town and drop into single digits on a steady motorway run. The M4 from Strathfield to Penrith and the M5 from Beverly Hills to Campbelltown are where these cars make sense. Stop-start on Military Road at 8am is where any large diesel drinks.

Two things to know before you take delivery. Both need AdBlue, and the car should come to you with it topped up. Both are automatic, both are all-wheel drive, and neither should be filled with anything other than diesel. Putting petrol in a diesel GLS is an expensive mistake that no insurer will treat as part of the claim.

If you are used to a petrol V8, the diesel will feel different for the first day and completely normal by the third.

Ride comfort on the M4 and the M5

Sydney's motorways are not smooth, and a large SUV on big wheels can turn a commute into a chore. This is where the GLS has a small but real edge.

The GLS rides with more compliance over the expansion joints on the M4 near the M7 interchange and over the concrete sections of the M5. It settles quickly after a sharp bump and stays quiet at 110 km/h. The X7 is firmer, and on the 22-inch wheels that some cars run, you feel more of the coarse chip surface on the M2 and the M7. It is never harsh, but it is busier.

Around town, the X7 is the more agile of the two. It turns in more sharply and feels smaller than it is in the tight stuff, which helps in the narrow streets of Paddington, Woollahra and Neutral Bay. The GLS is the more relaxed car, and on a long run to Canberra or the Southern Highlands it is the one you would choose.

Both are quiet. Both have good seats. Both will do the daily run from Balgowlah to the CBD without leaving you tired.

If your own car is an X7 with adaptive suspension, a base GLS may feel softer than you are used to. If your own car is a GLS, an X7 may feel a touch more alert. Neither difference is big enough to justify turning down a car that is otherwise available and equivalent. You can read more about how equivalence is judged on our like-for-like page.

Which one insurers push back on, and why

Insurers do not push back on the badge. They push back on the number, and the number is driven by what the replacement costs to hire, not by whether it is a BMW or a Mercedes.

In practice, the GLS is sometimes queried because it sits at the top of the large luxury SUV bracket and the hire rate reflects that. The X7 is in the same bracket and attracts the same scrutiny. Where a claim goes sideways is usually one of three things:

  • The replacement is a higher tier than the car it is replacing, for example a GLS when the damaged car was a mid-size SUV.
  • The hire period runs longer than the repair reasonably requires, often because the repairer is waiting on a part.
  • The claim is not clearly not-at-fault, or liability is still being argued.

The way to avoid the argument is documentation. A police event number if police attended, photos of both cars, the other driver's details, and a repairer's estimate of the repair time. Our first 24 hours page sets out what to collect at the scene.

If the insurer delays or disputes, the answer is not to shout. It is to keep the correspondence factual and to have a hire company that understands credit hire and can explain the arrangement. Our how credit hire works page explains the mechanism, and dealing with insurers covers the escalation path.

One thing that genuinely helps: take the replacement that matches your car, not the one that is one tier up. It is easier to justify and it removes the most common objection before it is raised.

Delivery and collection logistics

Both cars are based at Mascot and both can be delivered. That matters more than people expect when you are without your own car.

Delivery is typically to a home or workplace address. If you are in the east, that means a driveway in Randwick or a loading zone in Surry Hills. If you are on the north shore, it is a street in Chatswood or a car park at Macquarie Park. If you are in the west, it is a driveway in Parramatta or a business address in Norwest. Delivery is arranged at a time that suits you, and the car is handed over with a walk-around so any existing marks are noted before you drive away.

Collection works the same way in reverse when your own car is ready. If your repair finishes early, call and we will arrange collection rather than leave you paying for a car you no longer need.

Two practical points. First, the car comes with a full tank or a known level, and it should go back in the same state. Second, if you are in a building with a height-limited car park, say so at booking. A GLS with a roof box or an X7 on tall suspension will not fit under a 2.0m beam, and the last thing you want is to be turned away at the boom gate in Milsons Point.

Self-drive only. The minimum driver age is 20 on most cars and 25 or 30 on some. The rate, the bond and any fees are shown on the car's page before you pay. Paying by card carries a small surcharge; bank transfer and cash on the rental do not. The bond equals the excess you choose. Cars can be booked from a single day.

Making the call when your own car is in the shop

If you have read this far, you already know the answer: for most people, either car is a fair replacement for the other, and the deciding factors are availability, delivery timing and the third row.

Choose the GLS if you regularly carry adults in the back, you want the more relaxed ride on the M4 and M5, or your own car is a GLS and you want the closest match. Choose the X7 if you want the sharper around-town feel, you mostly carry children in the third row, or your own car is an X7.

If neither is available on the day you need it, there is a third option worth knowing about. The Genesis GV80 3.0D LUX seven-seater is a large diesel luxury SUV with three rows, all-wheel drive and delivery available. It is a different badge and a different feel, but it does the same job. Note that the minimum driver age on that car is 30.

Whichever you take, get the paperwork right. Confirm the hire period with your repairer, keep the replacement for the time the repair actually takes, and return it promptly when your car is ready. If the repair is going to run long because of a parts delay, tell the hire company early so the arrangement can be extended properly rather than discovered at the end.

If you are a fleet manager, a repairer or a solicitor looking at this regularly, our partners and referrals page explains how we work with referrers, and business and fleet covers multi-vehicle situations. Questions people ask

Is an X7 a fair replacement for a GLS?
Yes. Both are large, diesel, all-wheel-drive, seven-seat luxury SUVs in the same bracket, so an X7 is a reasonable like-for-like replacement for a GLS and vice versa. The main difference you will notice is the third row, where the GLS is slightly more comfortable for adults, and the around-town feel, where the X7 is a little sharper. If your own car is a GLS and you regularly carry adults in the back, say so when you book so the closest match can be arranged.
Which has the better third row?
The Mercedes-Benz GLS. Its third-row seat is higher, the cushion is longer and there is more knee room behind a normally positioned second row, so two adults can use it for an hour without complaint. The BMW X7 third row is perfectly usable for children and fine for shorter trips with adults, but taller passengers will notice the lower cushion and tighter footwell. If you regularly carry six or seven adults, the GLS is the better choice.
Can I get either delivered to my home?
Yes. Both the BMW X7 and the Mercedes-Benz GLS can be delivered to a home or workplace address across Sydney, including the east, north shore, inner west and west. Delivery is arranged at a time that suits you and includes a walk-around so any existing marks are recorded before you drive away. If your building has a height-limited car park, mention it at booking, because a large SUV will not fit under a low beam.
How long can I keep a replacement SUV?
For as long as the repair reasonably takes, which for a prestige SUV in Sydney is often four to eight weeks depending on parts availability. The replacement should be returned promptly once your own car is ready. If the repair runs long because of a parts delay, tell the hire company early so the arrangement can be extended properly rather than queried at the end. Your repairer's estimate is the document that supports the period.
What do I need to have ready before the car is delivered?
A current Australian driver licence, a second form of identification, and the details of the crash: police event number if police attended, the other driver's name and insurer, photos of both cars, and your repairer's details. The rate, the bond and any fees are shown on the car's page before payment. Paying by card carries a small surcharge, while bank transfer and cash on the rental do not, and the bond equals the excess you choose.
What if neither car is available when I need it?
There is a comparable third option. The Genesis GV80 3.0D LUX seven-seater is a large diesel luxury SUV with three rows, all-wheel drive and delivery, and it does the same job as the X7 and GLS. The minimum driver age on that car is 30, so it may not suit every driver in the household. If timing is tight, it is worth checking all three rather than waiting for one specific badge.
